The novel is funny, laced with witty dialogue, great subplots, a few surprises, and unforgettable characters, especially her niece and her mother-in-law, Athurine. A veterinarian's assistant and sometimes the veterinarian. Marilyn Grimes is no different from any other woman in her forties and as we get a peak into the issues of her life, we learn that those of us who are facing the same issues are not alone.
She troubleshoots for her grown kids, cares for her live-in mother-in-law, Arthurine and elderly poodle, Snuffy ; keeps tabs on her girlfriends Paulette and Bunny and her own aging mother and foster sister—all the while holding down a part-time job. Needless to say I enjoyed reading this book. Everything going on in the story seemed very cliche and predictable. The story line was age appropriate for me. Initially, you meet these characters who you immediately want to dislike. Not due to its reputation but because of its ability to change my outlook on life. Lord knows theyíve made enough floral arrangements to cover ten fake funerals; so many gingerbread houses that some of our Olympian ants stopped trying to penetrate them; and enough of those Little House on the Prairie year-round wreaths that ten years ago were like status symbols on front doors across America but now donít even generate a comment when a stranger rings their bell. How much do husbands really do? She is at the apex of frustration and exhaustion. She feels like shes about ready to jump.
It was slow going but I took one class per semester, sometimes 2 so as not to compromise my children and husband. Leon planned on doing the renovations himself, but fourteen years later, I stopped holding my breath.
