Shooting the scenes out of sequential order — an almost universal practice in filmmaking, in order to make more efficient use of setups and locations — ended up being less daunting than many theater actors expect. Cage has acquired something of a reputation as a problem flab orator but, there is no denying his actions comes from a place of un viral passion and eccentric conviction. And of course there would be the matter of Mr. The most difficult, time-consuming, and expensive sequence to shoot was certainly the attempted hit on Leo at his house. And how do you cut back and forth? When Jon Polito tried out his long and very funny opening monologue about the nature of ethics among gangsters, the brothers listened and then, in unison, told him that he missed a word. And so Joel and Ethan began to write, with Ethan at the Smith-Corona electric typewriter. Indeed, because everything had been worked out in advance, Sonnenfeld could shoot footage that would allow for sophisticated editing afterwards: match cuts, sound overlaps, dissolves. No doubt this is due to their collaborative approach, Ethan the more language-oriented, Joel the one who thinks in images.
The motion picture is a hybrid art form, consisting of visual images, language, and music. A terrified woman plunges a knife through the hand of her pursuer. As before, Joel was the prominent brother on the set while Ethan hung back and smoked, sometimes whispering a suggestion in Joel's ear. But when the casting agents caught sight of eight-month-old T. The double was needed because a real machine gun is heavy and it is hard for a regular actor to perform the dance while his own gun is firing off and recoiling and squibs are going off on his back.
But Embassy turned out to be less than thrilled with the finished film; they took it away from Raimi and had it reedited, changing its name, first to — believe it or not — Broken Hearts and Noses, then to Crimewave. This time the rehearsal period was only a week long. In fact, this was one of the few negative reviews that the brothers ever responded to. The problem was, of course, that well-known film composers are hugely expensive. The film also appears to have influenced Barry Sonnenfeld, who didn't even work on it.
They had already shot their next film, Barton Fink, and were hardly thinking about Miller's Crossing anymore. Matters are made more complicated and ominous by a bounty-hunting biker who seems like the incarnation of hell itself as he rises out of Hi's nightmares into real life. For every twenty people he went to see, Joel managed to convince one. But then, throughout their careers, the Coens have not liked to be identified with any other group of filmmakers. The next step was the all-crucial casting of the film. And so they had to use themselves instead. They often credit their sardonic intellectual oriented world view to their Jewish up brining in the suburbs outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota by parents who both work in collegiate academia. Faulkner's series about the Snopes family, with their countrified, poetic language and their grotesque actions may have generally influenced the screenplay. Peter Chesney and his company, Image Engineering, came on as the special-effects coordinator. And if you let him stay for even five minutes he would already be setting up a 16mm projector, lowering the lights, and shining two minutes of film on your office or living-room wall. Together these two serve up as much trouble for our two 18:44 as they do laughter for the audience.

And so they began to write during the evenings and weekends of 1980, using as settings the roadhouses, bars, and stretches of desolate highway that Joel had seen in Texas. Their auspicious introduction took place on a New York sidewalk in front of the rented cutting room, as Joel stood waiting for a 22-year-old independent filmmaker named Sam Raimi to appear. The Coen brothers were looking for investors — they needed a mere three-quarters of a million dollars — and felt sure you would want to be one.
