Responses I gave this book five stars because I thought it was a great book. A man of wisdom and courage. All one has to do is google founding fathers andrepublic versus democracy, and you'll see they all meant for ourgovernment to be a republic and not a democracy. So, my argument, and I think the evidence is fairly strong in support of this, is that was not the case at all. The story ends with Lincoln and his wife heading to the play. The French did take advantage of the war because the internal fighting did violate the Monroe Doctrine.
